Anxiety & Depression

Expert therapy by Nicola Illsley

Don’t Suffer in Silence. I Can Help.

Anxiety and Depression often go hand in hand. If you are feeling anxious or depressed, it’s important to reach out to someone.

How do you know if you have depression?
Look out for changes in these 4 areas

Mood

Thinking

Physical State

Social Changes

Causes

Depression can be caused by biological factors  but psychological ones play a big part including:

  • Inflexible rules about how we should behave
  • Loss of all kinds including a loved one through bereavement or separation, a job, a friendship, health etc
  • Stress of all kinds including unemployment, financial worries, difficulties with partners, parents or children, illness and changes in life circumstances.

Treatment

Depression can be treated in a number of ways. Medication can be helpful but so too can therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a recognised and effective form of therapy but I believe that therapy is always best when tailored to the individual. That might mean CBT but it might also mean using a mixture of approaches alongside it such as hypnotherapy mindfulness and creative therapy interventions.

If depression is affecting you, reach out to someone. If you would like to see whether therapy could help you, contact me to arrange a no obligation first session so that we can talk about how it might work for you.

Anxiety

A certain amount of anxiety helps us to be more alert and focused. Too much anxiety, or constantly being anxious, is very unhealthy and detrimental to our lives and relationships.

Anxiety is the body’s way of responding to being in danger. Adrenaline is rushed into our bloodstream to enable us to run away or fight. This happens whether the danger is real, or whether we believe the danger is there when actually there is none. It is the body’s alarm and survival mechanism.

When we get anxious we tend to get into scanning mode – constantly on the lookout for danger, hyper-alert to any of the signals, and that makes it more likely that the alarm system will be activated.

Anxiety is a threefold problem – thoughts, physical sensations and behaviours Unfortunately, without intervention these tend to become a vicious cycle – each one feeding into the others and making them worse.

If anxiety or depression is affecting you, reach out to someone. If you would like to see whether therapy could help you, contact me to arrange a no obligation first session so that we can talk about how it might work for you.

Social Anxiety

If you are suffering, I can help. Both Psychotherapy – particularly using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy –and Hypnotherapy are very effective for treating depression and anxiety. I use both of these approaches coupled with the understanding that there are many other strategies and techniques to help you holistically such as mindfulness and self care.
